At Frederick Douglass High School, students’ families and the staff celebrated the Class of 2024 at the annual Senior Signing Day, which salutes their achievements as they embark on the next phase of life. Principal Lester Diaz likened it to the recognition athletes receive when they commit to play sports in college. “It’s our goal to give our seniors the same experience,” he said. “Whether you go into industry, the military, or college – it matters.”
Over 150 participating seniors heard their name called, received a certificate, and signed it like a letter of intent as the school’s freshmen looked on. The idea was to show the younger students where they will be in three short years and to inspire them to pursue their dreams as well. After their turn in the spotlight, the seniors walked through a tunnel of teachers offering congratulations, high-fives, and hugs.
This year’s seniors at Douglass have collectively received acceptance letters from over 130 colleges and universities and have secured an impressive $9 million (and counting) in scholarships. Way to go, Broncos!
