Crystal Washington of Frederick Douglass High School has been named the 2025 Secondary Physical Education Teacher of the Year. The Kentucky Society of Health and Physical Educators (KYSHAPE) will salute her and other state-level winners June 25 at its summer conference in Lexington. She also will advance to the SHAPE America national competition.
Washington, who coaches track and field at Douglass, teaches P.E., Health, Controlling Stress, and Women’s Conditioning. She has advocated for increased opportunities in P.E. courses tailored to meet students’ diverse interests and abilities. Having served in Fayette County Public Schools for nearly 20 years, she recently completed her Principalship Certificate and a doctorate in Educational Leadership.
“I aim to foster a culture of wellness and active living, empowering students to embrace healthy lifestyles that will benefit them both in school and beyond,” Washington said. “Students should prioritize lifetime fitness, as it enhances life expectancy and fosters improvements in cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular endurance, strength, and flexibility.”
“Beyond physical benefits, lifetime fitness significantly contributes to mental health by offering effective coping strategies for managing anxiety and depression, while also promoting healthy relationships,” she added. “Ultimately, a commitment to lifetime wellness leads to a happier, healthier life.”
